A Conspiracy of Lies

Lenin's Tomb & Guards
Lenin's Tomb and Guards, Moscow, Russia

"Fabulous. A remarkable and important achievement. Chambers brilliantly evokes Russia in all its foreboding complexity."
—Louise Penny, New York Times bestselling author

Diana began A Conspiracy of Lies as a screenplay upon the request of her then-agent for a "grand, old-fashioned romance." Those were the days of détente between the U.S. and former U.S.S.R. and Diana wanted to symbolize this rapprochement with the coming together of two very different characters, an American businesswoman and Russian music conductor. Their unlikely union triggers powerful forces, setting off an explosive reaction that threatens to change the course of history.

Diana traveled to Russia, where the Moscow Film Commission was interested in an international coproduction. At home, she continued her research of Russian history and culture, and added a subplot involving a rock band and "world music." After some near misses at financing the project, she knew she had to continue the story in a novel.

The romantic intrigue begins in Hong Kong, where renowned conductor Alexei Borodin meets Julie Reilly, a recent widow and mother of two young children. Sparks fly and worlds collide as her technology holdings become the focus of a ruthless KGB plot to reignite the Cold War. After they wed and the family moves to Moscow, a series of accidents and anonymous threats grows ever more real and menacing, enmeshing them in a world where betrayal poisons every relationship and loved ones are never safe.

At once a sweeping saga that plays out from Moscow to Paris, Istanbul to Tokyo and Tbilisi, Georgia, it is also a personal story of love and loyalty, family and friendship, as well as a chilling subtext for the intense conflicts that continue in Russia today.
